OUR PROGRAM
THREE MAJOR OBJECTIVES GUIDE ALL ACTIVITIES IN OUR PROGRAM
Academic Success: Providing a consistent, reliable source of encouragement and advice, including tutoring for academic subjects
Career Awareness: Helping students adopt a proactive stance on building their career and planning educational choices
Character: Helping the students develop socio-cognitive skills to bridge the transition into college
EMERGE Program, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, is a mentorship program that aims to enhance both career awareness and academic achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for at-risk 9th grade girls. Our program consists of a blended method of face-to-face mentoring session in conjunction with tele-mentoring (using electronic communication or computer conferencing systems) to support a successful mentoring relationship.

EMERGE works through a series of well-defined interventions to promote academic/character and career awareness at the early stage in a young woman’s development.
Electronic Mentoring Environment to Recruit Girls to Engineering
Utilize best practices:
Sufficient duration of mentoring - Quality and Quantity
Regular exchanges between mentee and mentor (virtual or in person): approximately 30 minutes every week
Communication is focused on program-relevant content
Relationship quality remains positive
Supervision and training of mentors
IMPACT
Mentee performance: EMERGE can help mentees maintain or improve their grades in school. We can track mentees’ grades and performance throughout their high school years.
Skill development in STEM: Mentees can develop new skills and imrpove exisiting ones through our mentorship program. Mentees get the opportunity to use the principles of engineering to plan, build, and test their projects doing various activities.
Career awareness in STEM: EMERGE can help mentees be aware of their career interests by exposing them to different areas of STEM.
Engagement: EMERGE can increase mentees engagement in STEM areas by providing opportunities for learning and development.
