Integrating CS Principles with Virtual Reality

Workshop Description: A cutting-edge workshop revolutionizing teaching practices through the immersive power of Virtual Reality (VR) technology. This workshop is designed to align with Computer Science (CS) standards while showcasing the versatility of VR integration across all subjects and grade levels. This workshop aims to empower educators with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to integrate virtual reality into computer science education effectively, fostering student engagement and deeper learning of CS concepts.

Educators will discover how VR can seamlessly align with CS principles while enhancing curriculum delivery in diverse subject areas Through dynamic sessions and hands-on demonstrations.

Some examples of how VR is integrated into any class or subject at all levels:

· Mathematics: spatial reasoning, mathematical modeling, probability, and statistics.

· Science: virtual labs: field trips, climate change simulation.

· Language Arts: storytelling immersion, creative writing, public speaking practice.

· Social Studies: historical reenactments, cultural exploration, civic engagement.

· Fine Arts: artistic expression, art history tours, music composition.

· Physical Education: fitness challenges, skill development, mind-body connection.

About Mr. Brian Boswell

Brian Boswell is the Multimedia and Technology Specialist at Rose-Hulman. He is an award-winning audio and video producer whose work has been seen on A&E, The History Channel, and ESPN. In addition to traditional audio and video, he also works with 3D Animation and Extended Reality.

Brian holds a master’s degree in Telecommunications and has worked in education and academia in various capacities his entire career. At Purdue University Fort Wayne he trained and supervised students in television productions including NCAA Division I games which were broadcast on ESPN. At Ball State University he taught audio production courses. He helped guide students in getting projects nominated for and winning regional Emmy awards, and he chaired Emmy award judging panels. Additionally, he founded Indiana Public Radio’s now-annual live radio drama. The premiere production--a re-creation radio, television, and web simulcast of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast--garnered an Indiana Broadcasters Spectrum award, and attracted media attention from the Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and the BBC. At the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California he supervised digital artists and animators in producing interactive learning content. He provided voiceovers and produced 2D and 3D animation for both online and instructor-led courses. He developed production processes for the president’s vision of creating handwriting instruction videos for non-western written languages. He taught seminars on copyright law and creative commons usage. Other career highlights include being a consultant for Apple Computers to improve the audio functionality in Final Cut Pro, and working with musicians like Dave Matthews, Ozzy Osbourne, and Oscar Peterson.
